The International Workshop – Andrology and Reproductive Medicine

On May 9, 2025, the International Workshop – Andrology and Reproductive Medicine was successfully held by the EAA Latvian Andrology centre of iVF Riga Holding.

The conference brought together more than 100 participants from Italy, Israel, the Netherlands, Spain, the Baltic states, and other European countries. The audience included urologists, andrologists, gynaecologists, reproductive science specialists, endocrinologists, and general practitioners.

The conference was dedicated to current issues in male reproductive health and scientific advancements in andrology. Both clinical and research topics were addressed – from the genetics of male infertility to treatment options for andropause.

In her opening speech, Dr. Violeta Fodina, MD, PhD, head and the leading specialist of iVF Riga Holding, emphasized the importance of the conference in the context of modern developments in andrology. She highlighted the need to develop and apply the most advanced research in this field to improve male health indicators and underlined the importance of keeping specialists informed about the current issues in male reproduction and andrology.

Dr. Fodina also emphasized the significant role of the iVF Riga Andrology and Urology Centre – the only andrology centre in Latvia accredited by the European Academy of Andrology (EAA).

A highlight of the conference was the key lecture “Genetics of male infertility: from research to clinical utility” by Prof. Csilla Krausz (Florence University, Italy). She talked about the genetic aspects of male infertility and the association of certain genes with defects in embryo development and division, which lead to repeated pregnancy failures.

Another presentation that aroused great interest was “Gametogenesis, Oncogenesis, and Evolutionary biology – the implications for infertility” by Jekaterina Erenpreisa, Dr. habil. med., The Full member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences.

During the second session, the topic of “Andropause” was discussed. Prof. Francesco Lotti (Florence University, Italy) shared current opinion on prevalence and causes of late onset hypogonadism (andropause), while Prof. Mario Maggi (also from Florence University) spoke about pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment of late onset hypogonadism (andropause).

In the third session, speakers presented their research and work in the field of azoospermia diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Shlomi Barak (Assuta Ashdod University Hospital, Israel) spoke on the topic, followed by scientific advances from Prof. Jan-Bernd Stukenborg, (Karolinska Institute, Sweden) and clinical advances from Prof. Rod Mitchell (Edinburgh University, UK) on the use of in vitro and in vivo methods to promote spermatogenesis.

During the final, fourth session, participants were introduced to the “Aphrodite criteria for male infertility management” presented by Sandro C. Esteves, MD, PhD (Androfert – Andrology and Human Reproduction Clinic Campinas, Brazil).

Dr. Juris Ērenpreiss, MD, PhD, Head of the iVF Riga Andrology and Urology Centre, gave an extensive overview on “Gonadotropin therapy in male infertility management”.

We hope the conference provided all participants with meaningful insights and served as an excellent opportunity for doctors to gain new knowledge that they can confidently apply in their practice.
