The International Conference “Reproductive Genetics: Opportunities for Diagnosis and Treatment”

27 Feb

Innovations and 12 years of experience

On February 26, 2026, a large-scale international conference was held, organized by iVF Riga Holding in cooperation with Riga Stradiņš University and the Latvian Association of Human Genetics. The event brought together leading experts to share knowledge on the latest achievements in the field of reproductive genetics.

More than 100 participants from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Israel, Italy, Germany, and other EU countries had the opportunity to learn about the possibilities of genetic testing in infertility treatment. The audience included specialists from various fields: geneticists, reproductologists, gynaecologists, urologists, andrologists, endocrinologists, family doctors, and laboratory specialists.

The main focus of the conference was on innovative and standard approaches in genetic disease screening, research into the causes of female and male infertility, and embryonic level factors. Special attention was paid to PGT-A and PGT-M methods, sharing real-world experience on the possibilities and results provided. Access to state support for reproductive genetic testing was also analysed, comparing the situation in Latvia and other European countries.

Expert Insights

In the opening speech, Dr. Violeta Fodina, MD, PhD, CEO and the leading specialist of iVF Riga Holding, emphasized the significance of the conference in relation to the ever-increasing need to use genetic testing in determining the causes of both female and male infertility. She highlighted the role of the iVF Riga Genetics Centre in expanding the scope of genetic research and the use of state-of-the-art technologies, noting the centre’s 12 years of successful work.

During the conference, world-class experts presented their findings:

Prof. Antonio Capalbo (Italy) introduced the audience to modern genetic testing possibilities in reproductology.

Dr. Shlomi Barak (Israel) shared his experience on integrating genetic advances into male Infertility management and IVF preparation. Israeli perspective.

Prof. Frank Tüttelmann (Germany) drew attention to the fact that exome (or genome) sequencing significantly increases the diagnostic yield in infertile men.

Dr. Ieva Grīnfelde, a medical geneticist, spoke about genetic disease screening in family planning in Latvia.

Ludmila Voložonoka, Rīga Stradiņš University Lead Researcher, Scientific Laboratory of Molecular Genetics, provided a detailed look at the genetic causes of female infertility and testing.

Dr. Violeta Fodina’s, MD, PhD, lecture on genetic causes of embryo arrest sparked an active discussion.

Experience and Future Perspectives

The third session focused on embryonic genetics. Medical Geneticist Liene Korņejeva and molecular geneticist Alise Eihmane presented Latvia’s 10 years of experience in the field of PGT-A and PGT-M, as well as genetic testing in cases of pregnancy loss.

In the concluding session, Dr. Linda Gailīte, MD, PhD, Leading researcher at Rīga Stradiņš University, Head of the Molecular Genetics Scientific Laboratory, and Anna Dorondo, head of the iVF Riga Stem Cell Centre and quality manager, provided an overview of research results and reimbursement policies for reproductive genetic testing.
